La musica inglese dal 1800 al 1960 costituisce un ricco capitolo nella storia della musica e questo libro offre al lettore una introduzione ai maggiori compositori, con un testo sempre legato alla possibilità di ascolto su cd.

La musica di Elgar è ormai conosciuta ed apprezzata ovunque, ma la sua fama nasconde altri musicisti validissimi. Per esempio, nel 2004 La Fenice ha scoperto la musica e l’umorismo del Mikado (1885) di Gilbert e Sullivan, e nella scia di questo successo sicuramente è l’ora di portare le melodie dei Gondoliers (1889) nelle calli di Venezia. Ecco un libro che invita ad esplorare musica, finora poco conosciuta in Italia, di compositori che aiutano a capire il genio di un popolo. Il testo parte da cenni trovati nello Zibaldone di Simon Mayr, il maestro di Donizetti, dunque l’epoca del Belcanto rappresentato da musicisti come Bishop, Balfe, Wallace e Benedict. Le fortune della Royal Academy of Music e del Royal College of Music sono esplorate là dove insegnavano maestri geniali come Mackenzie, Parry e Stanford – uomini che hanno assicurato una scuola feconda. Tanti giovani di grandi promesse sono caduti nelle trincee della Grande Guerra. Dopo questa tragedia europea la musica inglese è fiorita con Bantock, Bax, Holst, Vaughan Williams e altri, e la ‘Scuola di Parry’ raggiunse l’apice con compositori come Howells, Finzi e Rubbra. È un libro che porta alla luce anche lo scandalo degli anni sessanta, quando la BBC proibì la musica inglese in favore dei ‘modernisti’ della seconda scuola viennese come Stockhausen, oppure Boulez, Berio e altri. Ma grazie all’impegno di appassionati e di alcune case editrici la strada per una vera “renaissance” è stata aperta: quasi ogni mese si annuncia la riscoperta di musiche dimenticate.

Non è una lettura puramente musicologica, è un viaggio attraverso lo spirito e la cultura di un popolo in un preciso momento storico.

The book is conceived as an introduction to British classical music from the beginning of the nineteenth century until the 1960s. The text is written in order to enthuse readers and to encourage them to listen to the wide repertoire now available on CDs. However, the culture and especially the literature of a nation are brought into focus due the texts chosen by the composers to set to music. The browser of this web sight is encouraged to read the extracts from Stephen Cross’s review. The book was written in Italian by the author with the help of Eugenio Cattaneo.

John Stewart Allitt, nato in Francia, è stato educato in Svizzera, in Italia ed in Inghilterra, così da considerarsi, per preparazione culturale, un europeo eclettico  cosmopolita. E' stato per molti anni senior lecturer in storia dell'arte presso due accademie d'arte di prim'ordine a Londra. Ha scritto saggi ed articoli sull'arte, la letteratura e la musica. Negli anni '70 venne coinvolto nella rinascita di musica sacra e profana di Mayr, Mozart e Donizetti. Ha dato vita alla Donizetti Society. Poi ha fondato con Ian Caddy la Mayr+Donizetti Collaboration e questo sodalizio ha promosso concerti per radio e in teatro e ha curato la pubblicazione di edizioni critiche della musica dei due compositori. E' nel comitato Internationale Simon Mayr Gesellschaft in Germania. E' anche un socio corrispondente dell'ateneo di Bergamo. Attualmente è membro elettore della Temenos Academy dedita allo studio delle tradizioni più nobili dell'umanità, un'accademia che è sotto il patronato di HRH il Principe di Galles. Ha scritto due libri su Donizetti e due su Mayr. Nel 1981 il presidente Pertini gli ha conferito l'Ordine di Cavaliere 'Al Merito della Repubblica' per i suoi contributi agli studi italiani. E' sposato con tre figlie.

GIOVANNI SIMONE MAYR: vita, musica, pensiero

In questo libro troviamo un ritratto del maestro di Donizetti. E' il primo libro in italiano scritto su Mayr in tempi moderni. Propone al lettore un vero pellegrinaggio intellettuale, inserendo il compositore nel panorama culturale della sua epoca: un compositore non facile da capire, ma di importanza decisiva per la musica dell'ottocento italiano.

This book is the first to be written in Italian on Mayr in modern times. Mayr was fundamental to the dramatic development of Italian classical music of the nineteenth century. Through his student Donizetti, his influence was to travel far and wide, and his educational ideas became basic to the development of Italian musical education. Mayr is set into the context of his thought and times, and various operas, cantatas and aspects of his religious music are discussed. The reader is invited to enter the composer’s intellectual world of ideas, thus establishing many aspects of Donizetti’s education.

Questo libro è il tentativo di comprendere la profondità di Donizetti nel contesto del "criterio" e della "filosofia" della sua arte, così da fare incontrare il lettore con un compositore che è poco apprezzato, o comunque poco conosciuto, nella sua profondità e intensità artistica.

Both these books are conceived as relating to each other. Donizetti is portrayed in the context of his thought and philosophy of life; he emerges as a composer of serious intent who had to struggle with the operatic conventions of his time. It was only with the generation that followed him that composers found the freedom that Donizetti was denied; however, it is clear from a study of the mature works that he was undoubtedly Italy’s greatest romantic composer.

Il Poeta-Teologo della meraviglia e della felicità

Vorrei fare conoscere Traherne, poeta seicentesco inglese, agli italiani, il popolo che tanto mi ha dato. È un sommo teologo e un grande poeta. La difficoltà sta nel fatto che mi sembra impossibile tradurre la bellezza dell’inglese seicentesco di Traherne. Si può soltanto suggerire la visione di Traherne. Se gli inglesi dicono che vale la pena imparare l’italiano per leggere Dante, lo stesso si può dire agli italiani per leggere Traherne nell’originale. Dunque, nel libro, tutte le citazioni saranno nell’originale, seguito da una traduzione il più letterale possibile.

 Il poeta è stato riscoperto all’inizio del novecento e lentamente attraverso gli anni parecchi sono stati scoperti documenti e poesie. Un’edizione di ‘tutte le opere’ è già stata avviata e sarà ovviamente allargata con i nuovi apporti rinvenuti. Questo libro si concentra sulle cosidette ‘Dobell Poems’ che rivelano il pensiero teologico essenziale di Traherne. L’interpretazione è impreziosita da estratti da altri scritti ed in particolare dai famosi ‘Centuries’, cioé i ‘secoli’ di meditazioni.

DANTE IL PELLEGRINO

Perché scrivere un altro libro su Dante? È una domanda che merita una risposta. Miei studenti, ormai vecchi quasi quanto me, spesso vengono a trovarmi, e chiedono: ‘Perché non scrivi quei discorsi che ci hai fatto su Dante?’ Per essere onesto, credo che le letture dantesche siano state l’aspetto più impegnativo della mia carriera di insegnante, certamente più valido rispetto alla storia dell’arte ed anche alla musica, di Mayr e di Donizetti. Riprodurre tutti quei discorsi dalla mia memoria sarebbe impossibile, e se  anche lo fosse, darebbero vita ad un libro enorme. Dunque ho fatto una scelta fra quello che ricordo. È strano che mi venga richiesto di compiere questo lavoro nella lingua italiana. Che sia accettato come un ringraziamento all’Italia e al suo popolo.

Thanks to my publisher Prof. Sergio Pagliaroli and Dr Eugenio Cattaneo who kindly edits my work, I now write almost exclusively in Italian, this is a great joy, for Italy has been my cultural home for decades. It is a privilege to have found such an excellent publisher who takes pride in his work producing books to last and which give pleasure to the eye.

My two books on Mayr and Donizetti, both translated by my publisher, represent the fulfilment of my work on the two composers; the English books add simply a comprehensive listing of Donizetti’s work, especially his religious compositions, whereas the Mayr book contains a first attempt to catalogue the composer’s work. Of necessity it now needs to be revised in the light of new discoveries, corrections that have come to light, and recent changes in library indexing. However, it has been a great satisfaction to know that the catalogue has encouraged numerous revivals.

My work on these two composers has now come to an end, freeing me to write on three of my other interests. With regards to Mayr, whose revival is now well under way in Germany and Italy, I recommend the following recordings:

These five recordings enable the listener to trace Mayr’s work from two of the earliest sacred compositions and an early comic opera to Medea (1813) and on to two late works that illustrate the composer’s maturity. 

The book on British classical music simply asked itself to be written and I sincerely hope that it will encourage the appreciation of splendid music south of the Alps. As I write, new recordings are being made month by month of music drawn from this splendid treasury, and fortunately I did call the conclusion of the book an envoi, for it would be now easy to add another chapter and to make a few necessary corrections.

I have also finished my texts on Traherne and Dante; these two books represent, I believe, my best work. They are in the hands of my publisher.

Both books grew out of my profession as a teacher and are the result of many years of reflection. ‘Dante’, for example, is born out of numerous readings of the Commedia with students and adult groups. On the other hand, my work on Traherne grew out of lecturing and readings at the St Theosevia Centre in Oxford and the Temenos Academy in London.
